- 1) Rise in divorce
- ALLAN + CROW - key factor as leaves 1 parents alone with child
- GINGERBREAD - 49% of LPs had children within marriage then divorced + became LP
- NEW RIGHT - divorce laws changed making it easy = less commitment to marriage = rise in LP
- PHILLIPS - 'flight from parenting'. Less willing to participate in traditional family life
- DRA 69 - 'irretrievable breakdown' quicker + easier
- MFPA 84 - reduced petition time from 3 yrs to 1
- 2) Changing social attitudes
- GINGERBREAD - 51% of LPs never married. Women more likely to become LP without being married before.
- DAVID MORGAN - greater equality for women = bring up children on own.. Less financially dependent on male.
- WILKINSON - 'genderquake' of women. Thought of being female LP no longer unthinkable. 90% of LPs = female.
- BARLOW ET AL - people more accepting of having children outside of marriage.
- Secularisation = less stigma
