    • 1) Rise in divorce
      • ALLAN + CROW - key factor as leaves 1 parents alone with child
      • GINGERBREAD - 49% of LPs had children within marriage then divorced + became LP
      • NEW RIGHT - divorce laws changed making it easy = less commitment to marriage = rise in LP
      • PHILLIPS - 'flight from parenting'. Less willing to participate in traditional family life
      • DRA 69 - 'irretrievable breakdown' quicker + easier
      • MFPA 84 - reduced petition time from 3 yrs to 1
    • 2) Changing social attitudes
      • GINGERBREAD - 51% of LPs never married. Women more likely to become LP without being married before.
      • DAVID MORGAN - greater equality for women = bring up children on own.. Less financially dependent on male.
      • WILKINSON - 'genderquake' of women. Thought of being female LP no longer unthinkable. 90% of LPs = female.
      • BARLOW ET AL - people more accepting of having children outside of marriage.
      • Secularisation = less stigma
