      • BECK + BECK GERNSHEIM - individualisation, less pressure to follow traditional norms + freedom of choice
      • ALLAN + CROW - effective contraception cohab without fear of pregnancy.
    • 2) Decline in popularity of marriage + rise in divorce
      • BHPS 98 - 40% of people saw cohab as alternative to marriage
      • 45% of marriage end in divorce. High risk
      • MCRAE - cohabiting mothers saw no advantage to marriage. Limiting free + fear of divorce led to reject marriage.
      • MORGAN - Marriage going out of fashion
