  • Inclusion
    • Definitions
      • "The action or state of including or of being included within a group or structure" (google.com)
        • Not just an action but a feeling
      • "A sense of belonging: feeling respected, valued for who you are; feeling a level of supportive energy and commitment from others so that you can do your best"  Miller and Katz (2002)
        • It is all about valuing the individual and encouraging equality.
    • Who could be affected?
      • Anyone! If you are able to feel excluded you can be included
        • SEN, Gender, Age, Ethnicity etc.
    • How to make people feel included...
      • SEN schools could help children to gain a full education despite their individual needs, however there is much debate over this.
      • Allow participation in all activities, adapt activities so that they are suitable for all.
      • Educate all children in SEN so that they have an understanding of the behaviours of their SEN peers
        • Start at an early age i.e. reception/year 1 with simple explanations of the conditions which may lead someone to have SEN, then gradually add more detail to these explanations as the children get older to ensure a comprehensive understanding

        • Greater focus on pupils with a SEN, still emphasises the importance of pupil voice
      • Ladder of Participation - Arnstein (1969)
