- Impacts of Volcanic Hazards
- Social-Individuals, families and communities
- 200,000 deaths in last 500 years
- Lower than other hazards due to prediction, evacuation, diversion/ steering of lava
- Secondary impacts- famine (Iceland- Skaftar fires) 25% pop died
- Over crowding and lack of water and supplies.
- Homelessness and refugees.
- 1991- Mt Pinatubo eruption displaced 100,000 people. Ashfall- houses collapsed and houses buried farmland
- Lahars in the river valleys for months after eruption. Aeta tribal people had to abandon homes on slopes of Pinatubo. Lowland areas- refugee camps-young and elderly died of diseases
- Psychological issues- people may not be able/ want to return
- 200,000 deaths in last 500 years
- Economic- Infrastructure damage and costs to agriculture, industry and government
- Negative for regions economy- linked to social impacts
- Lava destroys houses, factories, bridges, farms etc
- Lahars, ash falls and jokulhlaups can destroy a wider area. Destruction of commercial areas, forestry, tourist amenities
- Mt St Helens- 600km2 of trees. Montserrat- 7000/11000 pop evacuated. Cost Britain £100 million
- Decreased production and employment
- Environmental- landscape, ecosystem and climate
- Change landscapes- look lunar
- After Krakatoa- 1883- 300m mountain became 300m deep submarine crater.
- Mt St Helens- landslide reduced height by 400m
- Death of vegetation and animal life.
- Pinatubo-1991- over 1million farm animals died
- Impact global climate-
- 1815- cold summer, crop failures and famine- killing millions- due to eruption of Mt Tambora- indonesia
- Mass extinctions in past due to series of volcanic eruptions
- Dust fills upper atmosphere, reduces insolation
- Change landscapes- look lunar
- Social-Individuals, families and communities
