  • The Impact of Bosworth 1485
    • Events
      • Henry had smaller force of 5,000 while Richard had x2
      • Although Richard expected support from nobility: the Stanley's stood by and eventually supported Henry with troops
      • Mistake of Richard: tried to finish the battle by killing Henry, but this meant he was separated from his troops and he was killed
    • Negative impact
      • showed the instability of the crown (the Stanleys and Northumberland betrayed Richard
        • With a weak claim to the thrown this was even more concerning for Henry
      • Potential threat of Yorkists, even the Woodvilles who supported him at Bosworth
      • Lord Lovell + the Stafford brothers escaped and would help in the rebellion of Lambert Simnel
      • Many thought of Henry as a userper
    • Positive impact
      • Henry able to present his victory as one given by God
        • Richard's defeat at Bosworth was seen as God's punishment for what he did to the 2 princes in the Tower
        • 15th century was an age when people believed God dictated events
      • Richard III killed in battle = removed him as a potential threat
        • + other powerful supporters were killed e.g. John Howard and Sir Richard Ratcliff
      • less than 1/4 of nobility supported Richard = suggests some sort of support for Henry
        • but still could not rely on noble support
