    • The concept of identity has been defines as 'A sense of self that develops as the child differentiates from parents and family and takes a place in society' (Jary and Jary, 1991)
    • Important sources of identity relate to nationality, ethnicity, sexuality, gender and class.

      • Postmodernists suggest that people's identities to have many different facets, that they frequently change and can contain considerable contradictions

      • Identities can be formed through cultures and subcultures to which people belong or in which people participate.
      • People living in Britain would be expected to have a strong sense of British identity.
