- I am Sayings
- I am the Bread of Life
- When the Israelites where in the desert, God, through Abraham, provided Mana from heaven for the people
- The mana only lasted just long enough to sustain the people. Jesus provides living bread that sustains forever
- Some scholars say that this is John's equivalent of the last supper.
- This is said in John 6 after the feeding of the 5000
- Bread was important in the Jewish religion. 12 loaves of bread would be baked for the Sabbath.

- I am the Gate for the Sheep
- The only way into the sheep fold is through the Gate The only way into heaven is through Jesus
- The sheepfold would not have an actual gate but an opening. The shepherd would guard this entrance at night
- The Pharisees are the thieves in the parable, not entering the fold by the legitimate entrance. They have selfish motives and steal and kill the sheep.
- In Genesis 28 Jacob sees a gate to heaven
- Matthew (synoptic) talks of the Pharisees shutting the door to heaven in people's faces.
- I am the True Vine
- The last I am saying -Addressed to the disciples during the farewell discourse
- Israel is described as a vineyard in Isaiah 5:7
- Vine is a symbol of peace as can only be grown in peace time.
- Many scholars believe this links to the wine of the eucharist
- The disciples need to remain in Jesus as the branches have to remain part of the vine
- God the gardener removes dead wood from the vine so only the branches that continue to bear fruit remain part of the vine
