  • I am Sayings
    • I am the Bread of Life
      • When the Israelites where in the desert, God, through Abraham, provided Mana from heaven for the people
        • The mana only lasted just long enough to sustain the people. Jesus provides living bread that sustains forever
      • Some scholars say that this is John's equivalent of the last supper.
      • This is said in John 6 after the feeding of the 5000
      • Bread was important in the Jewish religion. 12 loaves of bread would be baked for the Sabbath.
        • Bread symbolised the law
          • Jesus replaces the Law (Moses)
    • I am the Resurrection and the Life
      • Jesus says this just before he raises Lazarus
        • Lazarus had been dead for 4 days. According to Jewish beliefs the spirit departed the body after 3 days
      • Pharisees believed in resurrection, while the Saducees  did not.
      • Martha was confused as she believed that her brother would be raised on the last day
        • By bringing the resurrection of the end days into the present, Jesus declares himself both Messiah and God.
      • Carson - "He died in order to rise"
      • Milne - "Jesus has been revealed as the giver of life"
    • I am the Light of the World
      • This happens just before the healing of the blind man in John 9
      • Happens around the feast of Tabernacles
        • The feast of Tabernacles involved the lighting of 4 lamps, representing the pillar of fire that guided the Israelites in the Desert Exodus 13:21
          • Jesus is the fulfilment of the festival
      • Links with John 1:5 "The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never overcome it."
      • The Law was seen as light but kept the people in darkness. i.e. the treatment of the woman caught in adultery/ blind man is ostracized
    • I am the Gate for the Sheep
      • The only way into the sheep fold is through the Gate                               The only way into heaven is through Jesus
      • The sheepfold would not have an actual gate but an opening. The shepherd would guard this entrance at night
      • The Pharisees are the thieves in the parable, not entering the fold by the legitimate entrance. They have selfish motives and steal and kill the sheep.
      • In Genesis 28 Jacob sees a gate to heaven
      • Matthew (synoptic) talks of the Pharisees shutting the door to heaven in people's faces.
    • I am the True Vine
      • The last I am saying -Addressed to the disciples during the farewell discourse
      • Israel is described as a vineyard in Isaiah 5:7
      • Vine is a symbol of peace as can only be grown in peace time.
      • Many scholars believe this links to the wine of the eucharist
      • The disciples need to remain in Jesus as the branches have to remain part of the vine
      • God the gardener removes dead wood from the vine so only the branches that continue to bear fruit remain part of the vine
    • I am the Good Shepherd
      • Both closely linked
        • I am the Gate for the Sheep
          • The only way into the sheep fold is through the Gate                               The only way into heaven is through Jesus
          • The sheepfold would not have an actual gate but an opening. The shepherd would guard this entrance at night
          • The Pharisees are the thieves in the parable, not entering the fold by the legitimate entrance. They have selfish motives and steal and kill the sheep.
          • In Genesis 28 Jacob sees a gate to heaven
          • Matthew (synoptic) talks of the Pharisees shutting the door to heaven in people's faces.
      • Shepherds in the OT are associated with Kings and the Messiah.
      • The hired hands (Pharisees) run away when danger is there but the Good Shepherd (Jesus) protects his sheep
        • Jesus is not only willing to put his life in danger to protect the sheep but is actually willing to lay down his life for us.
      • Psalm 23 Ezekiel 34 talk about God as a shepherd
        • Jesus is taking up the role reserved for God.
    • I am the Way, the Truth and the Life
      • Addressed to the disciples during the farewell discourse
      • Jesus is going to prepare the way for the disciples - "In my father's house there are many rooms"
      • Psalm 31:5 "God of Truth"
      • Jesus is the way to God!
      • Jesus has to lay down his life for us to gain true life in heaven
    • Before Abraham was, I am
  • Old Testament symbolism
