  • Sleep
    • STUDY 3 - Horne (amino acids are involved with bofily repair after eating. Suggests that food is what makes us sleep for longer and most restoration occurs whilst being awake.
    • STUDY 1 - Horne and Minard (after length tasks people did not sleep for longer than normal. This clearly suggests that sleep is not needed to recover.
    • STUDY 4 - Harrison and Horne (compared 2 weeks of long sleep with normal sleep. Found that there is a limit to restoration and past the optimum point, sleep is not beneficial!
    • STUDY 6 - Moldofsky et al (deprived patients of SWS and many displayed symptoms of fibrositis. Those already suffering from this displayed disturbed SWS. Suggests sleep is important as id SWS is disturbed then the body is damaged. The more someone is woken, the higher the stress levels, the higher the fibrositis.
    • 2. An ultradium rhythm - SWS, REM, Stage 1234.
    • STUDY 2 - Sharipo et al (found that marathon runners slept for longer after their event and spent more time in SWS. Contadicts study 1 as the athletes needed to restore the body and SWS allows this.
    • 7. Predator avoidance theory -Meddis (animals at less risk are less likely to sleep).
    • 3. The sleep staircase - EMG, EEG, EOG.
    • STUDY 5 - Green (found babies sleeping mostly in REM and their brains grow enourmously. REM sleep is vital for growth of the brain.
    • STUDY 8 - Zepelin and Rechtschaffen (correlated body size and sleep time in 53 mammals. Only a correlation, not causal. Found that smaller animals slept longer which refutes Meddis as small mammals are the most vulnerable yet they're sleeping the longest and have high metabolic rates.
    • 4. Restoration theory - Oswald (restores brain and body), Horne (developed...REM not needed, core sleep restores).
    • 5. Ecological theories -small mammals with high metabolic rates.
    • 1. Real world context - all mammals sleep, 40% of life is spent sleeping, babies compared to elderly.
    • 6. Hibernation theory - Webb (animals sleep longer when they need to conserve energy).
    • STUDY 7 - Randy Gardner case study (17 year old had no sleep for 11 days. His brain didn't function as well but his body was fine. Sleeping and restoring the body are not linked.
