  • Hydrocarbons
    • Most of the hydrocarbons in crude oil are saturated hydrocarbons called alkanes (they have single covalent  bonds only).
      • The general  formula for the homologous series of alkanes is:       Cn H(2n+n)
        • A homologous series is a family of compounds with the same functional group. A functional group gives a family of organic compounds their characteristic reactions.
    • Alkanes can be represented by their molecular formula, or by displayed formula.
