- Hydrocarbons
- Most of the hydrocarbons in crude oil are saturated hydrocarbons called alkanes (they have single covalent bonds only).
- The general formula for the homologous series of alkanes is: Cn H(2n+n)
- A homologous series is a family of compounds with the same functional group. A functional group gives a family of organic compounds their characteristic reactions.
- The general formula for the homologous series of alkanes is: Cn H(2n+n)
- Alkanes can be represented by their molecular formula, or by displayed formula.
