          • Water evaporates & rises
          • Water vapour cools; condenses back into large water droplets
      • 25th August; Winds of 130 km/h
        • cools slightly; becomes less powerful
          • Channeled up through Gulf of Mexico, warm waters intensify storm into Cat.5
            • Winds around 290 km/h; causes Storm surges
              • Rain and Gale Force Winds; 4th most powerful
    • Warnings
      • 28th August; 1.2 million people issued with evacuation orders
      • 57 emergency shelters established in coastal areas
      • Motorways jammed; people obeyed orders to leave
      • Not enough buses to evacuate all vulnerable; transport had shut down
      • Ordered hurricane watch along the gulf coast states of USA - 27th August
    • Impacts
      • Deaths
        • 1836 - many drowned
          • bodies left for days before being recovered
      • Flooding made worse by heavy rainfall
        • 250mm during storm
          • 80% of city under water
      • Over 10,000 made homeless
        • most from poor inner city areas
          • 3 million without electricity
      • Levees & flood walls breached in 53 different places
        • Allowed water to flood city up to 3m deep
      • Shortage of food, no access to clean water
        • raised health risks & problems with contaminated water
      • Most roads (in/out of city) were damaged
        • two major road bridges collapsed
