- 1) Khrushchev's policy of destalinisation led to the removal of Imre Nagy as leader.
- 2) The USSR put Imre Nagy - a more liberal communist in change of Hungary
- 3) Nagy persuaded Khrushchev to pull Soviet troops out of Hungary
- 4) For a few days Hungary was free from Soviet control. Nagy introduced many policies that undermined Soviet values
- 5) Nagy announced that Hungary would leave the Warsaw Pact - this angered Khrushchev.
- 6) The USSR sent thousands of tanks into Hungary to crush peaceful protesters
