      • German monk + teacher of mythology
      • was worried about sin
        • He devoted himself to fasts, flagellations..
          • long hours in prayer and pilgrimages, and constant confession.
      • crude man: used foul language to combat evil
        • he was convinced physical ailments were from the devil
      • read the bible a lot - felt he could get closer to God this way
        • translated the bible into German
        • was influenced by the ideas of St. Augustine
      • ex-communicated from the church
        • for his radical ideas
        • was excommunicated because he was asked by Leo X
          • (pope) to stop (preaching about his ideas) and he refused
      • printed the 95 theses
        • of what the church should do and be like
          • the church laughed at him but the people didn't
            • spread protestant attitudes across Europe

      • the first evidence that Lutheran evidence was emerging was..
        • through 12 books being sold in Oxford that contained Lutheran ideas
          • 120 - books were burnt in Cambridge, the church was NOT happy
      • influenced William Tyndall who continued to translate the bible
      • fled to Holland after ex communication from the church
        • was still a part of the H.R.E and so was still religious
          • was labelled as a heretic
      • believed in Royal Supremacy
        • Monarch rather than the pope should be responsible for the land
          • Simon Fish: supplication for the beggars
        • also believed that the King should be head of the church and not the Pope
          • 'divine right to rule' closest to God on Earth
      • was optimistic that religon would change if the King was the head of the church
        • believed in a Godly prince - alleigance through body and soul
      • was supported by Cardinal Wolsey - chief advisor to the King
        • and also by the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer who was a Lutheran sympathiser
      • most Lutheran supporters were in the South East
        • everyhere else was v. catholic and did not listen to his ideas
          • only until later did Lutheranism spread beyond the south
    • Martin Luther: The ideas
      • Luther said that indulgences were bad as the Church would pocket the money
        • the Church were like car salesmen + lied a lot
      • Luther believed that we should pray to God for forgiveness and not Priests
        • we should all have our own personal relationships with God
      • Priests are not divine beings
        • Priets were just as holy as everyone else
          • Don't have any sort of special 'connection' to God
            • Cannot buy off your sins
      • All people should be able to read the bible and make their own interpretations
  • CONSUBSTANTIATION:       Lutherans do not believe transubstantiation exists but they believe in consubstantiation which is when the bread and wine becomes the blood and body of Christ but at the same time it is still just bread and wine
  • Believed that the Church was in need of SERIOUS reform - the Church was filled with many corrupt + immoral priests
