- Urban plan to repair damage of post war & 1960s housing
- Gov wanted to develop community after segregation & zoning mistakes.
- Gov gave £37.5m in April 1992
- Before - poor living conditions.
- Lack of electric, heat, water & indoor toilets.
- Some areas hit with bombs or just run down - slums.
- Overcrowded but good community spirit
- The cresents were supposed to be a new design- curved rows of low rise flats.
- Parks & green spaces.
- Deck access from above street - cars on ground level & pedestrians on concrete walkways above fumes.
- Cresents were poorly built & badly insulated. Too expensive for heat of low income residents.
- Cold & damp caused breathing problems for elderly & young
- Rats & cockroaches spread disease
- Crime & drug abuse on the dark decks where police didn't patrol became a problem, led to a bad rep
- In 10 years the cresents were declared unfit for purpose
- Scheme involved private companies, local authorities & members of the local community
- Housing - cresents demolished. Friendly, welcoming architecture (different types of houses & bricks) were built.
- New residents designed the houses themselves to suit their needs - affordable, energy etc...
- Community facilities - derelict church converted into Zion Arts centre for young people
- Local schools redeveloped
- Hulme Park 1st large park to be opened in Manchester since 1930
- Close to Manchester Uni so is popular with students
- Easier to tackle social problems of different ethnic groups with improved quality of life.
- Although the programme was a success many residents objected at the closure of shops, destruction of trees & attempted closure of local school.
