      • Lasses Faire-  the belief that people shouldn't be helped by the state but help themselves
      • Rugged Individualism-  no benefit system which meant Americans were responsible for their own lives with no help from anyone
      • They were criticised but Hoover did make changes and help move towards recovery
    • Sucesses
      • hosted first white house conference on child health and protection
      • he created a mood of optimism to try and break the cycle of despondency
      • built bay bridge and Hoover dam
    • Failures
      • lost his reelection in 1932
      • many of his policies didn't help to pull America out of the Great Depression
      • Hoover and republicans were blamed fr the depression
