- HOW DID EVENTS IN HUNGARY AFFECT COLD WAR RELATIONS?
- Soviet actions in Hungary led to bitter condemnation from USA & its allies but the only serious action against USSR came in the form of harsh words in UN & in newspapers & TV programmes of Western states
- 2 main reasons why the West did little to help:
- USA, GB & France were distracted by Suez Canal crisis in Egypt
- British & French invaded Egypt to take back canal without consulting USA
- USA & USSR both condemned British actions & there was a furious debate in UN- forcing British to pull out
- in these circumstances it was impossible to react to events in Hungary
- Hungary was too close to USSR
- would've been impossible for West to help the rebels without sending massive forces across Europe & this would have run the risk of triggering major war
- USA, GB & France were distracted by Suez Canal crisis in Egypt
- It was clear that Khrushchev wasn't going to let Hungary pull out of Warsaw Pact
- he would allow some reforms to take place but no total independence
- the Soviet invasion resulted in a new government which disbanded most of the Hungarian army & began a programme of political education in the remaining units to ensure their loyalty to USSR
- Khrushchev increased number of Soviet divisions in Hungary from 2 to 4 & made Hungarian government accept presence of these troops for protection of Hungarian
- Hungary had to pay for these troops to be stationed there
- it was clear that Communist control in Hungary could only be maintained if it was propped up by presence of Red Army & Khrushchev was prepared to do that
