  • Hormonal Control in Humans
    • The Endocrine System
      • Glands
        • Pancreas
          • Produces insulin - regulates blood glucose level
        • Adrenal Gland
          • produces adrenaline
        • Thyroid
          • produces thyroxine - regulates heart rate, temp, metabolism
        • Ovaries (fem)
          • Produces oestrogen for menstrual cycle
        • Testes (male)
          • produce testosterone for sperm production
        • Pituitary Gland
          • directs other glands to release hormones
    • Diabetes
      • Type 1
        • Little or no insulin is made
          • persons blood glucose level can rise and kill them
          • Insulin therapy - injections at mealtimes
          • glucose is removed from the blood once food has been digested
          • amount depends on diet and activeness
          • Regular exercise and limiting intake of sugars
      • Type 2
        • Insulin Resistance
          • Body cells don't respond to insulin
          • blood sugars rise to a dangerous level
          • overweight and obese increases chance
          • controlled by eating carb diet and regular exercise
    • Controlling Blood Glucose
      • Too much insulin
        • glucose moves from blood into liver and muscle cells
        • insulin secreted by pamcreas
        • blood glucose reduced
        • insulin makes liver turn glucose into glycogen
      • Too low glucagon
        • blood glucose increased
        • glucagon secreted by pancreas
        • glucose released into blood by liver
        • Glucagon makes liver turn glycogen into glucose
    • The Menstrual Cycle
      • Hormones Involved
        • FSH (Folicle Stimulating Hormone
          • Produced in pituitary gland
          • Causes an egg to mature in the ovaries (follicle)
          • Stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen
        • Oestrogen
          • Produced in the ovaries
          • Stimulates the release of LH (releases the egg and FSH)
          • Causes lining of the uterus to grow
        • LH (luteinising Hormone)
          • Produced in pituitary gland
          • Stimulates the release of an egg at day 14 (ovulation)
        • Progesterone
          • Produced in ovaries
          • Maintains lining of the uterus
          • Inhibits release of FSH and LH
      • The 4 stages
        • Stage 1
          • Day 1: menstruation starts
          • Lining of the uterus breaks down
        • Stage 2
          • Day 4-14: uterus lining builds up
          • thick spongy layer full of blood vessels - for fertilised egg
        • Stage 3
          • Day 14: egg is released
          • ovulation (egg is developed and released)
        • Stage 4
          • Day 14-28: the wall is maintianed
          • Cycle starts again
