- 1862-Homestead Act:
- Opened up settlement in Western US, allowed any American to put up a claim for 160 free acres of land
- 1850's- People Begin to move West
- The first homesteaders moved onto the Great Plains (see push, pull, enabling factors)
- 1861-1865- American Civil War
- Started because the north and south had different opinions on slavery. North fought to abolish slavery and won. Confederate government collapsed.
- 1869- Transcontinental Railway Completed
- Many southerners disagreed with it as it did not include southern states. It was completed despite this.
- 1873- Timber Culture Act
- A movement to encourage people to plant more trees: if someone promise to plant and cultivate 40 acres of trees they got an extra 160 acres of land.
