          • Started because the north and south had different opinions on slavery. North fought to abolish slavery and won. Confederate government collapsed.
        • 1869- Transcontinental Railway Completed
          • Many southerners disagreed with it as it did not include southern states. It was completed despite this.
        • 1873- Timber Culture Act
          • A movement to encourage people to plant more trees: if someone promise to plant and cultivate 40 acres of trees they got an extra 160 acres of land.

        • Lack of water for farming
          • The homesteaders developed a tactic called dry farming. Where as soon as it began to rain they rushed outside to plough the land

          • Sod houses were extremely well insulated for winter but also had good ventilation for hot summers

          • The homesteaders burned dried dung as timber was in short supply
