- a child conveys a whole sentence worth of meaning into a single word or labels things around them
- child is deliberately conveying meaning through their word choice - differentiates this stage from babbling
- a child's first word is often 'mummy' or 'daddy'
- a large portion of first words are concrete nouns: names of things or people around them
- a child is likely to rely heavily on non-verbal commun. in order to clarify their meaning to their cargiver
