- Aims
- Investigate permanence of long term effects of privation due to institutionalisation
- Procedure
- 65 children taken into care before 4 moths old formed an opportunity sample
- Matched with control group of 65 children at home
- Had high staff turnover and policy against strong attachments being formed
- By 4yrs 24 were adopted, 15 back home, rest in institution
- Assessed with self reports/ interviews on self esteem at 4, 8, 16
- Findings
- Later in life had more difficulty with peers and wanted adult attention so acted out
- Once placed in families were still able to create attachments
- Had greater problems with siblings than control group
- Conclusion
- Maternal deprivation did not impact attachments as returned to family environment and developed attachments
- However problems at school= so institution can impact social development in later life
- Evaluation
- Longitudinal study- lost some children (could impact results)
- Longitudinal study- can see long term effects
- Can study variables that would be unethical in lab (as natural)
- Cause and effect is difficult to establish
