- Historians believe that the SA may have started the fire themselves

- However the amount of seats won for the Nazis was still not enough for a majority
- To gain a majority the Nazis went with the Nationalist Party and the Centre Party
- The Communists won 81 seats but they were not allowed into the Reichstag by the SA
- The Nazis had a majority so they could pass laws in the Reichstag
- Enabling Act
- This was a law which gave the Nazis the right to pass whatever laws they liked for the next 4 years
- They needed 2/3 of the Reichstag to pass the law so the SA intimidated and threatened opposition leaders
- All 81 Communist politicians were expelled
- It was passed with 444 votes to 91 votes against. Reichstag voted themselves out of power
- In November 1933 election only Nazis were allowed to stand
- The Reichstag only met to hear Hitler speak from then on

- Night of the Long Knives
- When: June 1934
- Hitler needed support of the army
- The Generals didn't support Hitler unless the SA was disbanded
- The SA leader: Ernest Rohm wanted Hitler to be more Socialist but Hitler did not want to lose the support of the Wealthy Industrialists
- Hitler was worried that Rohn was too powerful
- On the 30th June 1934 - ** murdered around 400 SA leaders including Rohm
- All opposition within the Nazi Party was removed
- The army now supported Hitler
