  • High Blood Pressure & Heart Disease
    • Carbon monoxide and nicotine from smoking increases blood pressure.
    • Having a poor diet can lead to heart disease.
    • Saturated fats can cause a build up of cholesterol
      • If you get too much cholesterol it starts to build up in the arteries- this forms plaques in the artery wall which narrows the arteries.
    • High salt levels can increase blood pressure
      • High blood pressure increases risk of damage to arteries- this encourages the build up of plaques.
    • Narrow arteries increase the risk of a heart attack
      • If the coronary arteries become narrowed the blood flow to the heart is restricted and the heart receives less oxygen.
    • A thrombosis (blood clot) restricts blood flow.
      • if a blood clot occurs in a narrow artery the heart will be blocked off completely.
    • If blood flow is blocked completely an area of the heart will be cut off from its oxygen supply
      • If the oxygen supply is cut off it causes a heart attack.
        • if a blood clot occurs in a narrow artery the heart will be blocked off completely.
        • If the coronary arteries become narrowed the blood flow to the heart is restricted and the heart receives less oxygen.
