  • HARD ENGINEERING: Holderness
    • SUCCESS??
      • groynes trap sediment, increasing width of beaches
        • protects LOCAL area, increases erosion of cliffs down-drift
          • (material eroded from beach isn't replenished)
          • Mappleton scheme: caused increased erosion of cliffs south of Maplleton
            • Cowden Fram (south of Mappleton) now at risk from flood
      • Sediment from erosion of Holderness coast is normally washed into Humber Estuary
        • (helps to form tidal mudflats)
        • reduction in sediment increases the risk of flooding on the estuary
      • protection of local areas leads to formation of bays between the areas
        • bays develop= wave pressure on headlands will increase
          • maintenance cost to high?
      • unsustainable?
    • DEFENCES
      • Bridlington
        • 4.7 KM long sea wall
        • timber groynes
      • Mappleton, 1991: two rock groynes and 500 m revetment
        • £2M, to protect the village and coastal road
      • Withernsea, groynes and a sea wall
        • riprap in front of sea wall after damage in 1992 storm
      • Hornsea: concrete sea wall, timber groynes, rip rap
      • (South) Hornsea: gabions to protect caravan park
      • Easingtion Gas Terminal: revetment
      • (east) Spurn Head: groynes and rip rap
    • POSSIBLE SCHEMES ALL HAVE PROBLEMS
      • SMP for Holderness for next 50 years is to 'hold the line' and 'do nothing' for Bridlington, Hornsea, and Mappleton.
        • 'unpopulated'
      • Coastal realignment for caravan parks further inland
        • more sustainable, wont endanger businesses
          • but sometimes isn't possible IE farmland, or no more land
      • sea wall proposed for the Easington Gas Terminal.
        • £4.5 M
        • reduce sediment flow to south, increasing erosion at the village of Easington.
          • pop. 700 people
          • longer sea wall? £7M
      • offshore reefs made from concrete- filled tyres to protect coastline?
        • act like breakwaters
          • harm the environment?
          • worked in USA
