- Hard Engineering
- Dams And Reservoirs
- Dams are multi-purpose~ flood prevention, irrigation water supply, hydro-electric power generation, recreation
- They can be very effective in regulating water flow
- Water is stored
- Dams are very expensive
- Straigntening
- It involves cutting through meanders to create a straight channel. This will speed up the flow of water along the river.
- It may protect one place but may increase the flood risk further down stream, problem is shifted rather than solved
- Concrete channels are unattractive and unnatural
- They can also damage wildlife habitats
- Embankments
- A raised riverbank. This allows the river channel to hold more water before a flood occurs
- They can be concrete walls or blocks of stone
- Sometimes they can be mud. This is cheaper, more sustainable and more natural
- Flood Relief Channels
- A man-made river channel constructed to by-pass an urban area
- During time of high flow, sluice gates can be opened to allow access water to flow away into the flood relief channel and reduce the threat of flooding
