    • Causes
      • The focus was 13km below surface
      • The earthquake was at a conservative plate margin between the Caribbean and north american(atlantic)
      • There were a lot of large aftershocks after the main earthquake (7.0)
    • Effects
      • About 1.5m people left homeless
      • About 220,000 people were killed
      • Over 1/3 buildings were destroyed in Port au Prince
      • About 300,000 people were injured
      • The aid struggled to get there because the port and roads were badly damaged.
      • gov buildings and cathedral destroyed
      • People in Port-au-Prince struggled to return to homes and ended up living in camps on outskirts of city
    • Responses
      • $100 bn of aid was donated
      • large scale investment was needed to bring Haiti's infrastructure up to standard
      • Micro-loans were given out by NGOs to help people 'build resilience' and start again
      • UN sent troops to help distribute the food and water aid
      • Reports were instant and the news travelled around the world but international help was slow to arrive.
