  • Guerilla warfare
    • used because the Vietcong could not beat the Americans in a direct fight
    • Supplied with weapons by China and Russia
      • Used the Ho Chi Minh trail- a route through Laos and Cambodia
        • The Americans couldn't attack the supply routes without escalating the war
    • Ambushing US patrols/ setting boobie traps
      • 58,000 troops died in Vietnam
    • Tactic was 'hanging onto the belts' of the Americans. Could not use artillery without killing their own men
    • Vietcong carried little and wore similar clothing to the civilians so it was difficult to identify them. This made the Americans paranoid
    • Ho Chi Minh trail- how weapons were supplied
    • What were the American tactics?
      • To a certain extent they fought a hi-tech war- bombing, artillery and helicopters
        • To what extent did the Americans fight a high-tec conventional war and Vietnam a low-tech one?
          • Yes- Agent Orange, Operation Rolling Thunder, NIxon bombing and helicopters used
            • In contrast, Vietcong used hit and run 'staying close to the belt' techniques
          • No- USA used search and destroy missions ans zippo raids
            • Vietcong were advanced : torpedo boats, radar systems and fighter planes
