      • higher boiling point
      • higher melting point
      • less reactive
        • is harder to gain an extra electron
    • fluorine, chlorine, bromine,  iodine & astatine
    • are non-metals with coloured vapours
      • fluorine = v. reactive, poisonous, yellow gas
      • chlorine = fairly reactive, poisonous, dense green gas
      • bromine = dense, poisonous, red-brown volatile liquid
      • iodine =
        • purple vapour
        • dark grey crystalline
    • all exist as molecules that are pairs of atoms
    • form ionic bonds with metals
      • called halides
      • form 1- ions
        • called halides
        • e.g. Na+Cl-
      • more reactive halogens will displace less reactive ones
        • from an aqueous solution of its salt
