  • GOOD AND EVIL
    • Evil
      • Natural Evil
        • Caused by nature e.g. Earthquakes or Tsunami's
      • Moral evil
        • Caused by Human actions e.g. Murder
    • Why is evil a problem for belief in God?
      • Maybe God doesn't care about human suffering or is causing it
        • Maybe God isn't all loving?
          • Or maybe God has a loving purpose to human suffering? Is it a test??
      • Maybe God can't do anything about human suffering
        • Maybe God isn't all powerful?
          • Or maybe he chooses to be powerless?
      • Maybe God doesn't know about human suffering
        • Maybe God isn't all knowing?
          • Maybe God knows so much, he can see the whole picture?
            • Or maybe its our view of God that wrong?? Either our perception of God is wrong or our perception of evil is wrong
              • Maybe God can't do anything about human suffering
                • Maybe God isn't all powerful?
                  • Or maybe he chooses to be powerless?
    • Why do we suffer?
      • Suffering is a test. JOB?
      • Suffering is a part of Gods plan
      • Jesus suffered and it brought him closer to God.
      • We can learn from suffering
      • Coping with suffering
        • Prayer
        • Focus on Heaven
        • Part of Gods plan- acceptance
        • Learn from suffering
        • Example of Jesus
    • Satan, Lucifer + The devil        (da same person)
      • Satan was cast out of Heaven after he and some of his followers tried to overthrow God
      • The work of the devil
        • Rules demons- He is said to have a host of fallen angles who can cause physical and mental afflictions (Jesus cured people of such things during exorcisms)
        • Rules the world- He is said to rule over governments, religions and sciences that go against Christianity.
        • Cause evil
        • Posses- He (and his demons) can posses and control humans. The Roman Catholic church occasionally performs exorcisms.
        • Black magic- He has been thought to cast spells and magic powers to witches
      • Many people say that whenever there is evil in the world, or people chose to do wrong, it is because Satan causes the tragedy or encourages people to do the wrong thing.
      • Not all Christians believe that Satan is a real person, some say he is a poetic way of explaining how people feel pulled in different directions, and why they often want to do bad things even if they know they are wrong.
      • The first temptation to humans was the serpent in Adam and Eve (the creation story). This is seen as the first example of the devil.
    • Why does evil exist?
      • "Evil triumphs without good and if there is no good than evil will exist instead"
      • St Augustine's theodicy
        • Augustine did not believe that evil people exist. He argued that evil cannot have been created by God but at the same time evil cannot have come from nowhere.
          • Instead he believe that evil was a lack of good- comparing evil to human disease saying that just as disease was the absence of health, evil is simply the absence of good.
            • When your body gets better the disease dissipates, so when good is activated evil dissipates.
            • He believed that evil happened when people do not chose good and live according to God's rules. This means evil is not a thing in itself but simply what is left when there is no good present
              • One does not "turn on" the dark, one "turns off" the light
      • Irenaeus's theodicy.
        • Irenaeus believed that evil came into existence because of free will. Irenaeus recognised God is responsible (for the existence of evil).
          • He believed that evil and suffering exist in order for us humans to chose how to act. He believed we were given the opportunity to use our free will and chose to be good by turning to God.
            • He believed that people need to suffer and needed to chose between good and evil otherwise they would be like robots.
        • Free will
          • God gave people free will so that people were not his puppets, but free to chose to be good or evil.
          • If God interfered every time people did something wrong the humans would simply be God's puppets and there would be no pint to their lives.
          • Humans decide whether to follow Gods instructions and must face the consequences of their decisions.
      • Damaged mind
        • Today evil is seen as a psychological problem. Evil is created by psychological forces which shape our character.
          • No one is inherently evil by psychological conditioning or emotional trauma can lead them to become so.
            • Things that shape our character are things such as tv, social media, schooling, parenting, diet, what we read.
      • The Devil
      • Original sin (Adam and eve eating the fruit).
      • Free will
    • Evil in the bible
      • The story of Job- Job's accuser.
        • "Would Job worship you if he got nothing out of it?" Job 1:6-13
      • The serpent in the Garden of Eden
        • "Now the snake was the most cunning animal that the Lord created" Genesis 3:1-6
      • Matthew 4:1-11
        • Satan tempting Jesus.
          • "Do not put the Lord God to the test"
    • Reasons for moral behaviour
      • Our conscience. (some say it is the voice of God)
      • The 10 commamdments
      • Famous Christians such as Martin Luther King Jr
      • Religious leaders such as the Pope, vicars.
      • Church comunity
      • Up bringing
      • Example of Jesus e.g. sermon on the mount
      • Prayer
