- Threats to Antarctica
- Search for mineral resources
- Commercial mining has never een completed as mining was banned by the Antarctica Treaty.
- Known coal, oil and gas reserves.
- Demand for future resources will put pressure on the mineral reserves.
- 1970/1980s some members of the treaty were secretly trying to form a new mineral convention which would have allowed exploration and future exploitation of nieral and gas reserves.
- Mining in Antarctica would be difficult, dangerous and expensive s the climate is harsh and thick.
- Any transportation of minerals/ equipment would be dangerous and drilling would be difficult due to ice/ glaciers.
- In the last 50 years, no large deposits have been found.
