    • Hydraulic action
      • The sheer force of water hitting the bed and banks of the river causes erosion to take place.
        • Pieces of the rocks break off and stones become smaller in size

      • Occurs when the load the river is carrying hits against the river beds and banks.

    • Attrition
      • Happens to stones and boulders in the river
      • When the stones and boulders knock against each other they are weakened over time
        • This causes pieces to break off and reduce in size

      • Occurs with rock types such as chalk and clay
      • Soluble rocks are dissolved in the fast flowing water
