    • What is gentrification?
      • The process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in improving aspects of the community
    • Before
      • Rough working class area. By the 1950s the area had become infamous for its slum landlords and inner city deprivation
      • Heavily populated by Caribbean migrants during WW1 because it was cheap
      • In the 1958 tension rose between the 'Teddy boys' and the new dwellers causing many riots
      • In the 1960s/70s young public sectors/ managerial began moving into the area

      • Positive
        • Employment has lowered levels of crime
        • Influx of high end boutiques, designer labels and high quality restaurants
        • Cheapest houses o the street is 350,000
        • In just over 40 years homes on Portland Road have seen prices rise from just over 11,00 to over 2 million
      • Negative
        • Closure of local pubs causing conflict  among locals
        • Sense of community lost
        • Cost of living has increased increasing poverty among locals
        • Tension between local community and wealthy newcomers
        • Landlords terrorise local tenants with violence

        • Victorian architecture, high end designer ships, luxury services
        • Suburbs had higher living and house prices, not always value for money
