- What is gentrification?
- The process whereby the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in improving aspects of the community
- Before
- Rough working class area. By the 1950s the area had become infamous for its slum landlords and inner city deprivation
- Heavily populated by Caribbean migrants during WW1 because it was cheap
- In the 1958 tension rose between the 'Teddy boys' and the new dwellers causing many riots
- In the 1960s/70s young public sectors/ managerial began moving into the area

- Employment has lowered levels of crime
- Influx of high end boutiques, designer labels and high quality restaurants
- Cheapest houses o the street is 350,000
- In just over 40 years homes on Portland Road have seen prices rise from just over 11,00 to over 2 million

- Closure of local pubs causing conflict among locals
- Sense of community lost
- Cost of living has increased increasing poverty among locals
- Tension between local community and wealthy newcomers
- Landlords terrorise local tenants with violence
