  • Genetic Disorders
    • Cystic Fibrosis
      • Genetic disorder caused by the cell membrane- lots of mucusin air passages and in the pancreas
      • Caused by the recessive allele
      • People with only one copy of the allele wont have the disorder- carriers
      • For a child to have the diorder, both parents must be carriers or sufferers
      • 1 in 4 chance of a child having the disorder if both parents are carriers
    • Polydactyly
      • Genetic disorder- extra fingers or toes, not life-threatening
      • Caused by the dominant allele
      • Can be inherited if just one parent has it- sufferer
      • 50% chance of a child having the disorder if one parent has the dominant allele- sufferer
        • Can be inherited if just one parent has it- sufferer
    • Embryonic Screening
      • For
        • Help stop people suffering
        • Laws to stop it going to far
        • IVF- most embryos are destroyed anyway
        • Cost Government and Taxpayers a lot of money
      • Against
        • May come a point where everyone wants to screen to pick the most 'desirable'
        • Rejected embryos are destroyed
        • Implies that people with genetic problems are 'undesirable'- increase prejudice
        • Screeing is expensive
      • Takes place during IVF, cell removed from embryo and genes are analysed
      • Good alleles are implanted into mother and bad ones are destroyed
