      • Groups identified as culturally deprived are working class boys and Afro-Caribbean boys.
      • Stress that education is meritocratic and that we have a compensatory education system
    • Working Class Attainment
      • Charles Murray identifies their is an underclass who are lower w/c and are characterised by their welfare dependency, lone parenthood and criminality amongst others.
        • Afro-Caribbean boys often raised in lone parent houses and lack positive male role models. Working class boys may be part of the underclass and expect just to do low paid work.
          • Groups identified as culturally deprived are working class boys and Afro-Caribbean boys.
      • Barry Sugarman identified characteristics of  the working class. Those were: Immediate gratification, collectivism, them and us, present time orientation and fatalism
      • Oscar Lewis suggested that there was a 'culture of poverty' which culminated with them having a 'fatalistic approach'
      • Could also use Basil Bernstein 'Linguistic Codes'- w/c rely on a restricted code
    • Ethnic attainment
      • Amy Chua- 'Tiger Mom' concept suggests that Chinese parents wont accept failure. Illustrates that culture is important to educational success.
      • Afro- Caribbean boys are the worst performers with only 40% achieving good GCSE'S in comparison with the national average which is 58.5%
