    • WHAT CAUSES THESE APPARENT CHANGES?
      • Improving living standards in the home
      • Decline of close-knit extended family
        • Less pressure from kin, easier to adopt new roles
      • Improved status&  rights of women:
      • Increase in no. of women in paid employmemt
        • Gershuny (2000)- Wives moved into PE= Less housework
          • Kan et al. (2011)- Men justs doing masculine defined tasks
      • Commercialization of housework
        • Consumer goods& services to help with reducing burden of houswork
        • Silver(1987)- C taken away the drudgery& time-consuming aspects of houswork
      • Weaker gender identities
    • CRITICISMS: ARE RELATIONSHIPS EQUAL?
      • Not much evidence that family is "symmetrical"
      • Women still perform majority of domestic tasks
      • Knudsen (2008)- Women perform two-thirds of all domestic work in the orld
        • Traditional segregated roles still remain
