  • Functions of the skeleton
    • Shape & structure - the skeleton determines how tall or short, and how narrow or broad we are. it also supports the rest of the body
    • Movement - helps the body move by providing framework to which the muscles attach
    • Protection - bones protect major organs e.g. brain, heart and lungs
    • Production - red and white blood cells are produced in the marrow of long bones
    • Mineral storage - stores calcium which can temporarily be absorbed from the bones if our diet does not supply sufficient amounts
