  • Functional Foods
    • Probiotics contain good live bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus (a lactic acid bacterium)
      • Probiotics are added to foods such as yogurt, soya milk and dietary supplements like capsules to supplement your own natural bacteria.
    • Plant stanol esters are chemical compounds that can lower blood cholesterol, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.
      • Stanols occur naturally in very low concentrations in plants but can be produced commercially by using bacteria to convert sterols into stanols.
        • Stanols can be added to foods such as vegetable spreads and dairy products.
