- Temperatures are too low for chemical processes or biological activity to have a significant effect
- Occurs on annual and diurnal cycles
- Water trapped in rock and soil freezes, causing a 9% increase and volume
- The pressure exerted on rock and soil causes it to disintegrate
- Also known as congelifraction
- Most active in periglacial environments
- Where sediments are exposed they can be blown by winds, creating loess deposits
