  • Freeze-Thaw Weathering
    • Physical or Mechanical weathering
    • Temperatures are too low for chemical processes or biological activity to have a significant effect
    • Occurs on annual and diurnal cycles
    • Water trapped in rock and soil freezes, causing a 9% increase and volume
    • The pressure exerted on rock and soil causes it to disintegrate
    • Also known as congelifraction
    • Most active in periglacial environments
    • Where sediments are exposed they can be blown by winds, creating loess deposits
