- Free will: volition, society & conflict
- Free will curtailed by volition
- What happens when one acts against their upbringing?
- Aristotle = some can resist temptations while other cannot
- Buddha = volition is what I call karma, for through volition one performs the action
- Three elements: premeditated action (control), diminished responsibility & lack of compucation
- Contracting into societies
- Society has a set of rules that are followed (social contract)
- Accepting the rules means we limit our behaviour
- These contracts are the only way society can function justly
- Conflicts of free will
- E.g. free speech = able to say anything no matter how malicious
- The law adds restrains to out freedom
- We are allowed as much freedom as our social context affords up practically
- Free will curtailed by volition
