  • Free will: volition, society & conflict
    • Free will curtailed by volition
      • What happens when one acts against their upbringing?
      • Aristotle = some can resist temptations while other cannot
      • Buddha = volition is what I call karma, for through volition one performs the action
        • Three elements: premeditated action (control), diminished responsibility & lack of compucation
    • Contracting into societies
      • Society has a set of rules that are followed (social contract)
      • Accepting the rules means we limit our behaviour
      • These contracts are the only way society can function justly
    • Conflicts of free will
      • E.g. free speech = able to say anything no matter how malicious
      • The law adds restrains to out freedom
      • We are allowed as much freedom as our social context affords up practically
