- VICTOR:
- "I suffered from living torture"
- "A tear seemed to dim her eye when she saw us"
- "Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds..."
- "The beauty of the dream vanished........horror and disgust filled my heart"
- Victor is selfish, he only wants to create life to be thanked or praised by them-Punishment from God that it was wrong.
- "I beheld the wretch- the miserable monster whom I had created."
- Alliteration suggests confusion and shock as he can't fully communicate his horrors.
- Victor takes responsibility to his actions- Realisation is shattered by his obvious prejudice towards the creature.
- "It was the secrets of heaven and Earth I desired to learn."
- "Seek happiness in tranquillity and avoid ambition..."
- "But sorrow only increased with knowledge."
- "Devil"- First word he said to the creature.
- WALTON:
- "But success shall crown my endeavours"
- "I bitterly feel the want of a friend."
- "I had rather die than return shamefully"
- VICTOR:
- "Shall I respect man when he condemns me?"
- "Why did I live?"
- "I am alone and miserable. Only someone as ugly as I am could love me"
- You are my creator, but I am your master; obey!"
- "I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend"
- Describes his nature as "benevolent". Use of past tense was "benevolent and good" appear to have been replaced by the creature's description and awareness of himself as a "fiend".
- Personification of "misery", making the creature's evil nature was nurtured by society and it's rejection of him.
- "I am malicious because I am miserable"
- The creature only wants a friend in life, and reveals loneliness is the main cause of all the things he did to Victor, not revenge.
- "I shall be with you on you wedding night"
