- FOSSIL FUELS
- Most are HYDRO-CARBONS
- only difference between most fossil fuels is the LENGTH of the hydrocarbons they contain
- EXCEPT coal - mainly carbon w/ lots of impurities
- Formed from remains of dead plants/animals over millions of year
- Fuels are retrieved by digging out the earth
- combustion - a type of chemical reaction
- Oxygen added = an oxidation reaction
- Oxygen is needed to burn hydrocarbons
- they burn quicker in pure oxygen than in oxygen from the air
- so pure oxygen taken from air, and kept in pressure cylinders for later use
- they burn quicker in pure oxygen than in oxygen from the air
- Oxygen is needed to burn hydrocarbons
- Most are HYDRO-CARBONS
- WHEN HYDRO-CARBONS BURN
- 2H(2) + O(2) = 2H(2)O
- C + O(2) = CO(2)
- WHEN COAL BURNS
