  • Flooding
    • Flooding works by exposing patients directly to their worst fears.
      • 'Throwing them in at the deep end'
      • An example is an individual with a fear of flying will be sent up in a light aircraft.
    • Fear is a time limited response.
      • At first the person is in a state of extreme anxiety or panic.
        • But eventually, exhaustion sets in and the anxiety levels begin to decrease.
    • Flooding positives: It is more effective than SD due to it being quicker. This also saves the participant money.
      • Ost's (1997) Research into flooding.
    • Flooding negatives: Doesn't work for all phobia's (social) due to cognitive aspects being involved. Ethics means a considerable amount of discussion needs to take place. Trauma leads to high attrition, waste of money if participants don't see it through.
