- Brushing- fibres brushed to improve strength, combine properties, create an effect, reduce cost, improve appearance, performance, comfort and after care.
- Popular Fabric Blends- Elastane and cotton, Nylon and Lycra, polyester and cotton, cotton and linen, silk and viscose
- Ply yarn- two or more yarns are twisted together. used to make wool suits and fine cotton
- Blending- 2 or more different fibres are combined to produce a yarn. Blended by spinning. Then woven or knitted to make a fibre
- Mixture- when a fabric is made up of 2 or more different types of yarn.
- Blended Fabrics- ploy-cotton, wool-nylon, cotton-lycra
- Ploy cotton- school skirt. Wool nylon- jumper. Cotton Lycra- swimwear
- warp- up and down. Weft- left to right. Selvidge- sides of fabric
- Plain Weave- used for cotton based fabrics. Hard wearing and strong. Holds shape well and has a smooth finish. Weft wraps around the warp= selvedge. Follows pattern over, under
- Twill Weave- makes a diagonal pattern. Weft goes over 2 yarns and under 1. Strong and drapes better than plain weave. Used for denim fabrics
- Satin Weave- the weft goes over 4 and warp under 1. Long weft on surface called floats catch the light and give shine. Floats can snag. Fabric is delicate such as statin or silk
- Strength Test- pull to see how much tension it takes before tearing
- Abrasion Test- rub with sandpaper to see if the surface rubs
