- As part of the British Empire, 13 colonies were under the authority of the British monarch
- The King appointed governors, who were in charge of each colony. Each governor appointed a council, which helped him to govern

- Southern colonies were expensive as there were vast plots and plantations, which grew tobacco or rice. Wealthy landowners lived there and over 50% were slaves
