- What is a household?
- A household means one person living alone or a group of people who live at the same address and share living arrangements. This group may or may not be related to one another
- What is a family?
- A social institution consisting of a group of people who are related by kinship ties: relations of blood, marriage or adoption
- Forms of family and household structure
- Nuclear family- two generations, parents and children living in the same household
- Extended Family: all kin including beyond the nuclear family
- Classic extended family- an extended family sharing the same household or living close by
- Modified extended family- an extended family living far apart, but keeping in touch
- Beanpole family- a multi-generational extended family in a pattern which is long and thin, few uncles and aunts, fewer children being born but people living longer
- Patriarchal family- authority held by males
- Matriarchal family- authority held by females
- Symmetrical family- authority and household tasks shared between male and female partners
- Reconstituted family/ step-family- one or both partners previously married, with children from previous marriages
- Lone parent family- lone parent with dependant children
- Gay/ lesbian family- same sex couple living together with children
- Single person household- an individual living alone
