      • = movement of people from place to place. affects size and age of population
        • In UK until 80's fewer immigrants than emigrants
      • Immigration
        • 1900 until WW2 - most immigrants non-white, fleeing persecution

        • Acceleration

          • some migrants permission to enter, some do not. Globalisation increases diversity
            • e.g. in 2014 26% of Chinese post grad students + 23% of UK
            • Vertovec: super-diversity: even within ethnic groups much diversity of culture - dispersed throughout UK

                • Citizens (full rights + benefits)
                • Denizens (highly paid professionals welcome by state)
                • Helots: slaves - exploited reserve army of labour - illegally traffiicked
        • Hoschild: Feminisation of migration
          • Hoschild: care, domestic, sex work in Western countries done by 3rd world women
            • result of working women less willing to do domestic labour
            • failure of state to provide adequate childcare
      • Migrant identities
        • Eade: migrants develop hybrid identities from nationality gives sense of belonging Study found Bangladeshi Muslims see selves as first Muslim, then Bengali, then British
        • Erikson: Transnational identities
          • globalisation creates movement - people do not see selves as one culture
          • modern tech = global ties without travel - migrants stay linked to others
        • Politicisation of migration
          • state policy to either help immigrants into culture or anti-terrorist policies linked with immigration policy
            • Assimilation: first state policy - aid migrants into culture and values of host country.
              • migrants hybrid identity means cannot accept one culture
            • Multi-culturalism: accepting migrants separate culture but superficial
              • Shallow diversity: e.g. curry as national dish = acceptable
              • Deep diversity: arranged marriages not acceptale
              • policies do not address racism
              • 1960's - trend of multi culture. 9/11 attacks - migrants MUST assimilate
