      • Boys do not like reading
      • Won't complete activities to achieve better such as taking notes and are more likely to have restricted linguistic code

      • Boys may no longer be interested in 'feminine' subjects which is why girls have a consistent lead in English
      • Some boys go on to study 'feminine' topics at university or further education

      • Less male role models so learning can seem quite feminine
      • A lack of a male teacher to look up to so they have no key educational figure to follow
      • Can be used to develop strategies to improve boys results
    • Laddish subcultures - internal
      • Boys tend to form anti-school subcultures to increase their masculinity
      • They won't pay attention to class as they are too busy disrupting classmates etc.
      • Explains why boys are so disruptive however assumes girls are not distruptive
    • Crisis of masculinity - external
      • Boys may lack ambition if there are no jobs available after school
      • Will see no point in working hard so are more likely to form a subculture
      • Looks at wider society issues
    • Moral Panic - external
      • A societal panic about the underachievement of boys however this could be a media exaggeration
