- Cognitive Interview
- The cognitive Interview was developed to increase the accuracy of EWT
- The Cognitive Interview was developed by Geiselman to try and increase the accuracy of events during police questioning
- The Cognitive Interview has four main techniques
- Interviewer tries to make the witness relaxed and tailor his language to suit his/hers
- Interviewer mentally recreates the environmental context and internal context of the crime scene
- 1. Witness Reports Everything, even if the information seems irrelevant or the witness doesn't feel comfortable
- 2. Witness is asked to recall details of the crime scene in different orders, this is done to prevent people reporting their expectations of how the event has happened
- 3. Witness is asked to recall the events from different perspectives, from the eye of other witnesses
- A Schema you have for a particular setting generates expectations of what would have happened instead of what actually happened
- 4. The Interviewer also needs to know when to establish eye contact, avoid any judgmental, personal comments, reduce anxiety, and get the witness speak slowly
- An Intruder carrying a blue rucksack entered a classroom and stole a projector, two days later participants were questioned using a standard interview procedure. Participants were asked 'Was the guy with the green backpack nervous, later in the interview participants asked what colour the rucksack was
- Participants in the cognitive interview was less likely to recall the rucksack as being green than those in the standard interview
- Cognitive Interview technique reduces the effect of leading questions
- Evaluation
- The cognitive interview is time-consuming it takes more time than the standard police interview
- Cognitive Interview requires special training, so it has a cost element to and it is time consuming making it less popular to use
- The Cognitive Interview also increases the amount of incorrect information compared to the standard interview
- Cognitive Interview produces a large amount of data, and also reduces the effect of leading questions
