- Eyam ~ 1665-66 Methods To Combat Plague
- Mompesson and Stanley.
- Rector, Rev William Mompesson who lived in rectory with his wife, Catherine and 2 kids. Was 28 year olds only had position for a year.
- His predecessor Rev Thomas Stanley, a puritan clergyman still lived in village.
- Actions of both of them resulted in setting up of quarantine zone.
- At a distance of half a mile from centre a boundary wall was set up. Villagers banned from going beyond this and notices erected to warn travellers marked by boundary stones.
- Some villagers considered leaving for Sheffield but Mompesson persuaded them not to.
- Quarantine of Village - three point plan.
- 1 - all plague victims buried as quickly as possible, near to their homes. Reduced risk of disease spreading.
- 2 - Church should be locked until epidemic over and all religious services held in open air to avoid disease spreading.
- 3 - Establishment of a cordon sanitaire around the village beyond which no Eyam resident could pass.
- Village of Eyam was not self supporting.
- Supplied with food from surrounding villages. Supplies left at boundary stones. Villagers left money in water troughs filled with vinegar.
