- Extracting Aluminium
- Ore is bauxite
- Using electrolysis
- Aluminium Oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite
- Brings melting temperature to around 900 degrees
- Graphite electrodes need constant replacing due to the reaction with oxygen wearing it down
- Need for a lot of electricity costs a lot - reasonably cheap
- At the cathode: Al3+ + 3e- -> Al
- At the anode: 2O2- --> O2 + 4e-
- Aluminium Oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite
- Uses
- reacts with oxygen - aluminium oxide formed to make a protective layer
- Less dense - lighter
- Cans and Aeroplanes
