- The IV in an experiment is often regarded as a cause and DV an effect
- The experiment method is a more objective method than others. However total objectivity is impossible since researchers interest will always have a influence and some confounding variables will have an effect
- reliability this is key as if the results are 'real ' it should enable others to do the same study and obtain similar results
- easier to replicate as can perform a controlled study which other researchers can replicate
