  • experimental design
    • experiments are usually about 2 conditions
      • 1) might be to have no caffine given to participants (control group) 2)participants are given a aprkling sugar drink (experimental group)
        • the iv is the amount of caffine consumed, while the dv is the outcomeof the degree of talkativeness
    • counter balancing
      • here half of the sample take part in condition 1 and half in condition 2 then swap conditions
    • matched pairs
      • here there is an independent design but the 2 samples are matched as much possible
      • evaluation
        • as participants only take part in a singe condition so order effects and demand characteristics are less of a problem
        • there is some attempt to reduce participant variable but participants can never be matched exactly
          • matching may be time consuming and expensive particularly if a pre-test is required
            • so this is less economical than others
